Aljira - A Center for Contemporary Art
This piece is currently titled “Shadow Dance-Alone but not Alone”. Through self-examination, the choreographer raises the question- are we ever really alone? Our physical being is maybe standing by iteself, but how a our introspective self? For most of us, we talk to ourselves as if there is another being within us. When we are still, we let our thoughts pass by like flowing water. If we could engage our shadows in a conversation, what would it be like?
Nai-Ni Chen also found the Tang Dynasty poem - “ Alone Under the Moon” by Li Bai. The poem describes the poet being alone under the moon. The moon and the shadow of himself accompany him in a conversation and they danced together
At Aljira, Nai-Ni Chen will be experimenting with several ideas with six dancers to music performed by the Prism Quartet composed by Chen Yi with four saxophone, giving the audience the first glimpse of this work in progress. The dance will be created in the gallery. This environment give the dance a special meaning and look.
The design of the movements will be the result of improvisation driven by the rhythm, image of poetry and the flow of the mind while alone. Meditation and breathing exercise will be emphasized to connect the inner energy with the movements. The study will also include exploration of the relationship of oneself and a constant partner. This constant partner that follows you forever can play many roles such as support, burden, suppression, or comforting. It can also create the feeling of companionship, dependence and separation. I expect that the improvisational process to raise many questions and shine lights on this state of mind that we all experience in our life.
After the 30 minute work process, the audience will be encouraged to talk to the dancers, and discuss their reactions to the work and the process of creation. There will be refreshment served. The performance is free to the public.
